Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced new efforts Wednesday for law enforcement reform in the state.
The changes come after weeks of protests that were sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
DeWine said while there are multiple law enforcement agencies across the state that have worked to improve community-police relations, it must be acknowledged that there are some officers in Ohio who have no place being in a position of trust. He said leaders must do more to make sure officers who lack professionalism and show racial bias are not wearing a badge.
DeWine said he is asking the Ohio General Assembly to require those who apply to take a law enforcement basic training to first pass a psychological exam showing they are fit to become an officer.
